Aimee Ramsey of Silver Image Transportation is pleased to be doing more to support ex-felons in the City of Dallas and in the State of Texas with her new awareness campaign. Ahead of the City of Dallas’ council elections, which will be held on May 3 this year, Ms. Ramsey believes more Dallasites need to know that ex-felons are excluded from running for office; regardless of how much good they have done for the community since their conviction.

Ms. Ramsey has dedicated her personal and professional life to advocating for fair hiring policies that prevent discrimination on the basis of prior convictions and through Silver Image Transportation—a company she built from the ground up, which has now become one of Dallas’ most highly rated and regarded silver service transportation companies—she has sought to become a community model on the value of hiring ex-felons.

Aimee Ramsey, herself an ex-felon who has had her own ballot rejected, believes it is deeply hypocritical that ex-felons can completely rebuild their lives, and become a pillar of the community, and still be blocked from becoming an official representative of the city.

As her new awareness campaign showcases, Dallas city is one of few municipal areas that blocks ex-felons from running for office; and in doing so, they go against key judicial precedents, including those upheld in neighboring cities like Houston and Austin.

A spokesperson for Ms. Ramsey and Silver Image Transportation said, “For 24 years, Ramsey has been a job creator, taxpayer, and advocate for redemption, operating Silver Image Limousine, a thriving transportation business. She doesn’t just believe in second chances—she lives them.”

It is Ms. Ramsey’s hope that, through this awareness campaign, more members of the greater Dallas community will get to see the injustice of the city’s policy—and see that it is blocking committed, experienced, passionate people from holding official positions on the basis of a criminal conviction they have long since paid for.

As Ms. Ramsey stressed, by omitting ex-felons from being able to run, the City of Dallas risks limiting the true nature of democracy—which ensures official members are elected on the basis of a true popular vote, not through a selective process of sanctioning and omitting candidates.

As her spokesperson added, Aimee Ramsey believes that the exclusion of ex-felons from the workings of Dallas City government is negatively affecting: “Small business owners who have rebuilt their lives and seek to advocate for policies benefiting working-class citizens, individuals who have served their time but remain locked out of leadership positions and voters who believe in redemption and want the power to elect their own leaders.”

She hopes that through her advocacy work, she and several other prospective candidates who have been vetoed from the upcoming council election will be given the opportunity to run.
