With little known about what causes knee osteoarthritis, a cure has yet to be found. Traditionally, joint replacement surgery was seen as the only option for those with late-stage knee osteoarthritis, but with the development of Arthrosamid, patients have access to a one-time gel injection treatment proven to alleviate the pain and stiffness caused by OA for up to four years.

In his report, MSK Doctors founder Professor Paul Lee, MBBch, MFSEM (UK), MSc (Sports Med), PhD, FEBOT, FRCS (T&O), explains that although Arthrosamid’s upfront cost is higher than other injectable treatments, its capacity to outlast these options by four to eight times makes it a more cost-effective choice in the long term.

“Arthrosamid is poised to make a significant impact in the field of orthopaedic surgery and regenerative medicine,” says Lee. “Clinical studies and real-world patient stories corroborate its efficacy, safety, and long-term benefits.”

Arthrosamid is a non-biodegradable injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel – also known as 2.5 iPAAG – that permanently integrates into the knee’s synovial tissue, thickening the tissue that lines the knee joint to create a sort of scaffolding effect. This barrier cushions the knee joint, reducing friction and improving the function of the knee.

Unlike injectables like hyaluronic acid for which the evidence concerning its efficacy is mixed, two decades of research into Arthrosamid reveals measurable improvements in pain, stiffness, and joint function. A 52-week study by Henning Bliddal et al. found significant symptom improvements, while another study by Maulana R, Cole A, and Lee P.Y.F showed reductions in patellofemoral bone marrow lesions following a single injection.

Lee notes that specialised clinics within the MSK Doctors network – such as the London Cartilage Clinic on Harley Street and 108 Harley Street Clinic – have developed a rigorous multi-step protocol for administering Arthrosamid that prioritises treatment precision and patient safety, maximising overall effectiveness.

For patients whose knee pain is not responding to over-the-counter painkillers or changes in diet, exercise or physiotherapy, Arthrosamid offers a cost-effective, long-lasting solution without surgery that can significantly improve a patient’s mobility and quality of life.
