In the visionary Pulstar Trilogy, Giancarlo Roversi crafts a gripping dystopian epic that explores memory, identity, and humanity’s place in the cosmos. Set in fictional Astralvia and inspired by real events, the universe extends into prequels, cartography, a newly emerging language, and cinematic musical scores created by Roversi himself.

Giancarlo Roversi is a Venezuela-born, multi-award-winning author whose body of work spans dystopian and philosophical science fiction, noir thriller, and dark romance. With a background as a computer engineer and accomplished musician, Roversi brings a distinctive fusion of technical precision and cinematic intensity to his work. His creative sensibility was shaped in part by years on stage, including performances alongside internationally recognized artists such as REM, Oasis, Travis, Duran Duran, and Maroon Five.

Following the breakup of his band Fractaler in 2011, Roversi dedicated the next fourteen years of his life to building the expansive Pulstar universe (Pulstarverse), comprising the Pulstar Trilogy and its two prequels. He originally wrote the novels in Spanish before translating them into English, and uniquely composed original soundtracks designed to accompany the books. His writing has earned widespread acclaim from readers and reviewers, frequently highlighted for their immersive world-building, noir-infused tone, and emotional depth.

A reflective creator at heart, Roversi is driven by a curiosity about consciousness, human nature, the meaning of existence, and the cosmos. Outside of writing, he enjoys family life, cooking, astronomy, animals, and lively philosophical conversations. This one-on-one interview shares Roversi’s background and experience writing the Pulstar Trilogy.

Tell us about the Pulstar Trilogy.

The Pulstar Trilogy is a mind-bending journey into a dystopian future where memory, identity, and reality itself are called into question. Inspired by real events in Venezuela yet cosmic in scope, this visionary series fuses hard science fiction, psychological suspense, and deep philosophical inquiry into an unforgettable reading experience.

DARE TO QUESTION EVERYTHING.

In Pulstar I: The Swan Barely Remembers, three strangers bound by a forgotten past awaken to a terrifying truth: they once incited a vengeance when their bodies were not human. As astronomer Jeral Murh emerges from a coma in the unstable nation of Astralvia, she realizes she may no longer be entirely human, and a relentless enemy who could change life on Earth forever is closing in. Riddled with mystery, suspense, and a smattering of romance, this gripping opener will have you reflecting on what it truly means to exist.

In Pulstar II: Meadows of Involution, Astralvia stands on the edge of irreversible change. With a historic election looming, journalist Larianne Blunt pursues the most important interview of her life, unaware that forces far beyond politics are about to reshape the nation, and the world. As an incurable phenomenon known as Involution spreads, no one is safe. The Pulstar universe grows deeper, darker, and challenges every assumption you may have had about what is real.

In Pulstar III: The Cracked Mirror of the Cosmos, the saga reaches its breathtaking climax. Humanity, reality, and the cosmos collide as characters driven by hope, obsession, and the search for truth face consequences beyond imagination. Suspenseful, philosophical, and emotionally charged, the trilogy’s conclusion delivers provocative ideas about consciousness and existence in a way that will blow your mind.

If you are ready for a trilogy that will captivate your imagination, challenge your perceptions, and stay with you long after you finish, step into the Pulstarverse.

What inspired you to write the Pulstar Trilogy?

The Pulstar Trilogy grew from an idea that first took hold when I was a teenager. At my sister’s birthday party, a guest began discussing a mysterious concept that completely captured my attention. Something about that conversation stayed with me, and even then, I felt compelled to explore it through story.

Years later, the project became deeply personal. The trilogy was shaped in part by a promise I made to someone very important to me, someone who is no longer here. What began as creative curiosity engulfed me, turning into a long-term passion and obsession. I became fascinated by the conflicts we humans endure as a species, and our unbreakable connection to the universe.

After more than fourteen years working on the trilogy and its prequels, Pulstar represents far more than a fictional world. The theories I explore in Pulstar have become my beliefs.

Above all, I hope readers are drawn into a gripping, immersive story that entertains them while also sparking curiosity, reflection, and conversation.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

Sometimes a single event changes us forever; other times, a series of events force us to make hard choices. When I was ten, I suffered an accident on a small train. I couldn’t walk for a year and almost lost a foot. During the months I couldn’t get up, I wolfed down science fiction novels, thrillers, and horror books. In 2011, my country, Venezuela, became more chaotic than it already was. That contributed to the dissolution of my band, Fractaler, and forced me to emigrate to Europe.

While I attempted to start a family, a tragedy in Venezuela forced me to return and stay there, isolated in an apartment all day, writing and composing. Eventually, I sold the apartment and returned to Europe, but my mind stayed in Pulstar and Astralvia.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

More than anything, I hope readers finish the trilogy feeling that it has subtly shifted the way they see the world. Pulstar is designed to entertain, but also to provoke reflection. Beneath the suspense and adventure lies an invitation to wrestle with larger questions: political, social, philosophical, and deeply personal, even when the answers are unsettling.

The central theme of the trilogy is how little we know about ourselves, about what is out there, about the meaning of our existence, and if there is any real meaning at all. The characters are driven by forces they barely comprehend, shaped by actions they don’t remember and identities they struggle to reconcile. That tension mirrors something profoundly human: the realization that memory, perception, and self-understanding are far more fragile than we assume.

Ultimately, if there is one message I’d like readers to carry with them, it is this: certainty is often an illusion. Questioning who we are, what we believe, and how our past defines us can be uncomfortable, but it is also where growth begins.
